Scientists are making some remarkable announcements about cocoa. So, if you are a chocolate lover, especially that of black chocolate, then open your ears to what I am going to say now.
Flavonals in cocoa and memory
It is not rocket science to know that chocolate is made from cocoa. But the good news is that, the flavors found in cocoa could reverse, the age related memory decline in healthy older adults.
Researchers found that after drinking the high flavonal cocoa drink, which was specifically tailor made for this study. The results were stunning, if a participant had the memory typical of a 60 year old at the beginning of the study. The same person after 3 months of taking that wonder cocoa drink had the memory of a 30 or 40 year old.
See, you are getting more curious minute by minute. But the scientists are quick to point out that the findings need to be replicated in a larger study.
Flavanols and blood pressure
Earlier studies have reported that the flavonals in cocoa are responsible for improved thinking, decreased appetite and lowered blood pressure. The indigenous people of San Blas Island in Central America enjoyed a flavonal, rich cocoa drink every day. They enjoy normal blood pressure regardless of age.
Now this led scientists to conduct a study. They found that the flavonals are responsible for the formation of nitric oxide in the body. This nitric oxide causes blood vessels to relax and open wide. Thus, it reduces blood pressure and keeps the heart healthy and happy.
The fat content of cocoa
The fat content of cocoa is said to be heart healthy. According to the health advisors from Cleveland Clinic, oleic acid found in cocoa, is similar to that of healthy fats found in olive oil. Stearic and palmitic acid, which also make up the fat content of cocoa, have a neutral effect on cholesterol.
Cranberries, apples, peanuts, tea, red wine and onion are the other foods rich in flavonals. All these foods in the right amounts along with moderate amounts of dark chocolate can make you fit as a fiddle.
