Researchers say that people who highly valued spirituality showed thicker portions of brain cortex that may protect against depression. Studies say that being spiritual protects against major depression by thickening the brain cortex counteracting the cortical thinning that would occur with major depression.

The belief in a loving, supportive and forgiving high power is related to positive mental coping for people with chronic conditions points out one study. Research shows that mental health conditions of people suffering from cancer, stroke, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury are positively benefited by spirituality, especially the support from positive people and spiritual intervention.

If a person suffers from depression, it can sap the motivation, make it hard to concentrate and leaves a person feeling helpless. Depression can affect your heart. At this juncture if you come to know that the creator of the universe is there to guide you, strengthen you and to care for you. I think that’s a different story.
