Everything You Need to Know About the Benefits of Castor Oil

Native to the eastern region of Ethiopia Castor oil has been in use from ancient times till today. Archeologists were surprised to find it in Egyptian tombs dating back to 4000 BC. Ancient Egyptians burnt it as a fuel in lamps, used it to treat eye irritation and gave to pregnant women to stimulate labor.

Even now it is pretty famous for the very fact that it can induce labor. You can read lots of such interesting stories on the internet.

Apart from being used to induce labor, this wonder oil has plenty of beauty benefits. It’s an essential commodity in your kitchen cabinet. If you don’t have one, after reading this article, you’ll know its importance.

What is Castor Oil?

It’s a pale yellow liquid pressed from castor beans and has a distinct taste and color. The castor seeds contain a toxic enzyme called ricin. Nevertheless, the heating process deactivates it and makes the oil safe to use.

This vegetable oil contains a nutritional makeup of powerful components such as fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, and antioxidants. Also it has antimicrobial properties, which help to fight off bacterial or fungal overgrowth on your scalp.

Apart from skincare it is widely used as an additive in foods, medications, and finds plenty of uses in the industrial and pharmaceutical sectors.

Benefits of Castor Oil

This multipurpose oil is budget-friendly and can be your best buddy in skin and hair care.

Natural Moisturizer

Being rich in ricinoleic acid castor oil helps to moisturize your skin. Ricinoleic acid acts as a humectant. It retains moisture by preventing evaporation through the outer layers of the skin.

You can use castor oil as such or use it with other skin-friendly oils like olive, almond, and coconut oils to make an ultra-hydrating moisturizer. Massaging your nails with castor oil will prevent brittle and cracked nails.

Its hydrating properties soften your skin and prevents the signs of premature aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and sagged skin. Applying a few drops of castor oil to your under-eye area every day will prevent and reduce wrinkles giving you beautiful eyes.

Healthy Hair

Castor oil acts as an intense moisturizer for dry and damaged hair. Applying it daily on your scalp helps to lubricate your hair shaft, decreases breakage, and increases flexibility.

This healthy oil is suitable for those suffering from dandruff, especially for people suffering from seborrheic dermatitis. It is an inflammatory skin condition that causes scaly red patches on your scalp. Castor oil effectively reduces inflammation, soothes your skin, and forms an effective household remedy for seborrheic dermatitis.

Castor oil attracts dirt and cleanses your skin. The presence of ricinoleic acid improves blood circulation providing nutrition for hair follicles resulting in long strands and less breakage. Being a humectant, it locks in moisture and makes your hair shine.

Massaging warm castor oil on your scalp not only fights scalp infection but also improves circulation and boosts hair growth.

Reduces Acne

Inflammation is believed to cause acne. Acne is due to an imbalance of certain types of bacteria on the skin, including Staphylococcus aureus. This medicinal oil fights bacterial overgrowth since it has antimicrobial properties.

A test-tube study shows that castor oil has antibacterial properties, and it inhibits the growth of several bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus.

If you suffer from acne, wash your face with warm water. This action will open the pores. Massage a few drops of castor oil onto to your face and leave it overnight. Next morning wash your face with cold water.

Being a natural moisturizer castor oil soothes your inflamed, irritated skin and gently cares for it.

Excellent for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis

The ricinoleic acid present in castor oil has impressive anti-inflammatory benefits. Topically applying castor oil reduces pain and inflammation. Even research studies vouch for the anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil.

Massage it onto your painful back or knees and follow it up with hot water bottle or heat pad. Leave it for an hour. This remedy will give you immediate relief from your pain.

Applying on psoriasis helps relieve dry, irritated skin. Thanks to the moisturizing properties of castor oil.

For thicker brows and longer lashes

Ninety percent of this medicinal lubricant contains ricinoleic acid that helps reverse hair loss. Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) is a hormone that causes male pattern baldness. Research has found that ricinoleic acid inhibits PGD2 and helps the scalp to regrow hair. It’s safe to do a patch test before you apply this vegetable oil to your lashes and brow.

Bedtime is the best time to treat your eyelashes. Clean your lashes from all the eye makeup. Dip a cotton swab and gently pencil it along the lash line. Wash your face in the morning.

Remove makeup and take a few drops on your fingertips and gently apply it on your eyebrows before going to bed. Finally wash it with cold, clean water in the morning.

Laxative

Being a laxative castor oil helps to clear your bowels. When you consume it by mouth, it gets broken down to ricinoleic acid. Then the intestine absorbs it stimulating a laxative effect.

Smaller doses are usually safe, but large amounts may cause vomiting, nausea, cramping, and diarrhea.

How to use

Though this oil is considered safe, it may cause adverse reactions in certain people. It is used to induce labor. So pregnant women should avoid taking it. In large doses, it may cause diarrhea, which leads to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It may even cause an allergic reaction in some people. Always do a patch test before using this oil.

Castor oil is a pocket-friendly multipurpose oil that’s a must in your kitchen cabinet.

Green Beauty Products: Sustainable and Healthy

Green beauty products have exploded into the market with various names such as “natural beauty” and “clean beauty.” A few years back, these natural products were primarily sold in farmers markets and health food stores with a label containing pictures of green leaves. But now sleek brands positioning themselves as agents of green beauty products are exploding.

Gwyneth Paltrow who launched Goop by Juice Beauty told Vogue: “The idea that you’re exercising and trying to eat well and then slathering yourself with chemicals, parabens, and silicones — it’s not great.”

She and “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon dipped French fries into a jar of moisturizer from her beauty line and ate it to prove the purity of the product.

What are Green Cosmetics

In the modern-day, marketing, green has become synonymous with natural, organic, or healthy. When you see the word green beauty products, you’ll instantly make eco-friendly assumptions about the product or brand.

Green or sustainable cosmetics are produced from natural ingredients that are produced from renewable raw materials. For example, bio-based oleochemicals are obtained from renewable plant and bacteria sources — these natural treasures form the crux of the green beauty movement.

Benefits of Green Beauty Products

Green cosmetics do not contain any artificial colors, synthetic and harmful chemicals, or other toxic byproducts. So they are less likely to cause any skin irritation. Natural and oleochemical ingredients used in green beauty products rely on the healing properties found naturally in plants and animals.

For example, Glycerine a natural palm oil derivative is a clear nontoxic liquid used in soaps and cosmetics. It is a humectant as well as an excellent moisturizer. It encourages your skin to absorb and retain water. Since it’s non-irritating, you can apply it anywhere on the body. Moreover, it has excellent antimicrobial and anti-aging properties and can also serve as an acne treatment.

Many petrochemicals used in conventional cosmetics are toxic pollutants. They degrade not only our environment but also our bodies. For example, the microbeads, these tiny pieces of plastic found in our exfoliating products and shower scrubs are washed into the waterways in substantial quantities. A study reported that over eight trillion microbeads are washed into the waterways every day. These products are now banned.

Though petrochemicals may give excellent short term results, the consequences, in the long run, are far more dangerous. Long term use of synthetic cosmetics causes eye damage, acne, headaches, premature aging, and hormonal imbalance. Phthalates may even cause type II diabetes and cancer. On the other hand, using green beauty products helps you to invest in long term beauty and health.

Ingredients that are not Sustainable

Toxic chemicals found in conventional beauty products include the following.

  • BHA and BHT
  • Formaldehyde releasing preservatives
  • Coal tar dyes
  • Aluminum
  • Dibutyl phthalate

Sustainable ingredients

These are safe as well as effective ingredients used in green beauty products.

  • Castor oil
  • Fatty acids
  • Coconut oil
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Phenoxyethanol

CBD Beauty Products- Do They Actually Work

Unless you’ve been living under a stone, you’ve would hear the term CBD. Also, known as Cannabidiol, this product is now everywhere.

Cannabis oil is a concentrated liquid extract obtained from the marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa. It is one of the many non-psychoactive compounds in cannabis with plenty of healing properties.

Cannabis oil has found its ways into our honey, hot chocolates, and even our pet foods. Lately, it has also entered into the beauty and wellness arena.

Natural beauty and skin care lines are jumping at this opportunity to incorporate CBD oil into a wide array of products from bath salts to lip balms to lotions because this oil is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound.

Beauty Benefits

Board certified dermatologists like Dr. Debra Jaliman recommend the use of this natural product for skin and hair since it is rich in vitamins A, C and E. Vitamin A stimulate the cells which produce tissues, and help to keep your skin firm and youthful.

Vitamin C fights the process of aging by stimulating the production of collagen and keeping your skin soft and supple. Likewise, vitamin E blocks free radicals and slows down the process of aging. CBD anti-aging creams diminish wrinkles, ruddy skin tone, and skin dullness.

Cannabis oil can also benefit breakout-prone complexions. Acne is an inflammatory condition which is linked to overproduction of sebum by sebaceous glands.

New research says that this non-psychoactive oil can help reduce sebum production. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help to soothe acne prone skin.

Another benefit of CBD oil is that it soothes irritated, sensitive skin. Its soothing and skin normalizing properties help reduce issues related to skin sensitivity, including redness.

Even though your skin may not be sensitive, it may get affected by environmental stressors. Using Cannabis oil beauty creams will protect your skin from the harmful environmental effects.

Things to Know Before Shopping for CBD Skincare

If you suffer from cystic acne, sunburn, wrinkles, skin dullness, and sensitivity CBD might be for you. Charlotte Palermino Co-founder of Nice Paper- a cannabis education platform gives valuable tips about choosing Cannabis oil skincare to Marie Claire.com

Before buying know your terminology, look for whole plant hemp, hemp extract, cannabis sativa extract, phytocannabinoids, phytocannabinoid rich (PCR) and Cannabidiol.

If these terms are on the label, there’s actual CBD in your products. This product is still mostly unregulated. CBD rich products will cost more than their lesser counterparts. Make sure you are spending your dollars on the quality product.

Finding a powerful formula requires some calculation. Compare the milligrams of Cannabis oil listed on the label, to the ounces on the packaging. If you want a potent formula, smaller bottles may have substantial doses while a large container that cost less will contain diluted CBD.

Next dosing is important. Check whether CBD or any related terminology is on the top half list of the ingredients. If it’s not present, then the dosing could be weak. If you find fragrance above CBD then probably it’s not very strong.

Shop responsibly and ask the brand for a Certificate of Analysis. This action proves that the brand has done exact testing on their product. Finally, look for diversity and support brands that are run by women and people of color. Try to encourage brands that support social justice.

If you put some thought into your CBD beauty products, it will not only enhance your beauty but be beneficial for the society as well.

The Ultimate Guide to Botox

Photo by Michael Dam on Unsplash

For Randi Newton using botox, the anti-aging miracle toxin has been overwhelmingly positive. She writes that nobody can stop the clock, but at least we can make small tweaks to alter one’s appearance. This magical toxin can make you feel more attractive, confident and little less intimidated by the aging process. Over the past six years, she has spent $10,000 on botox and thinks that it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind and feeling good about yourself.

What is Botox

Botox is obtained from the protein botulinum toxin-a powerful poison that freezes your muscles. Simply put botox binds to your muscle receptors thus preventing them from receiving the signal to contract. It acts as a mute button between your muscle and nerve. Medically it’s used to treat some muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove wrinkles.

When injected into humans in small concentrations Botulinum toxin works by preventing signals from nerve cells reaching muscles by paralyzing them. Nerves release acetylcholine a neurotransmitter at the point where nerve endings meet muscle cells. This neurotransmitter hooks itself to the receptors on the muscle cells causing the muscle cells to contract or shorten. Botulinum toxin reduces abnormal muscle contraction and allows the muscles to become less stiff.

Does botox hurt

Since it’s administered through an injection, expect to feel a few pricks. If you really hate needles ask your dermatologist to apply a numbing cream before the procedure. Usually, it’s a quick procedure, after which you can move on with your routine with mild redness.

What are the benefits

Cosmetic benefits of Botox are noteworthy. It helps to reduce wrinkles in your neck, forehead, and mouth with minimal invasion. As a result, you can enjoy a flawless complexion. As you age, your brow may drop due to the reduced elasticity of muscles. Botox cosmetic treatments lift up your brow, make your face look less tired and gives you a youthful appearance.

Excessive underarm sweating can be an embarrassing problem for many people. Botox treatments lessen the severity of this problem. This treatment is also effective in treating people who suffer from migraine headaches. Besides these uses, Botox is used to treat eye squints and leaky bladders.

Apart from these Botox is used for the following reasons.

  • Spasm of the eyelids
  • Severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms
  • Crossed eyes
  • Overactive bladder
  • Hemifacial Spasm

What are the side effects

Botox is usually safe so long as you visit a doctor who is trained and licensed, but there are some concerns. According to the FDA sometimes the toxin moves beyond the site of injection causing double vision, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, and urinary incontinence. Swallowing and breathing problems could endanger lives and requires medical intervention as soon as possible. Likewise, research studies report some adverse effects in therapeutic cases too.

Mild side effects linked to Botox

  • Mild pain and fluid buildup at the site of the injection
  • Headache
  • Numbness
  • Mild nausea
  • Drooping
  • General weakness
  • Flu-like illness
  • neck weakness
  • Bleeding
  • Decreased eyesight
  • Wheezing
  • Swelling
  • Hives
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue

How much does this treatment cost and how long does it last

Rates vary depending on your provider. But some hospitals charge between $150 to $400 per treated area. Cosmetic procedures are typically not covered by insurance. Though the results may not be instant, it takes five to fourteen days to see results which last up to four months. Research studies show that facial exercise speeds up the effects of botox and brings about change in your appearance by one day.

If you’re going to have this treatment, consult your doctor, get informed about the cost and plan accordingly. Afterall who doesn’t want to look young and beautiful?

All You Need to Know About Hair Extension Cautions

Are you planning to go in for hair extensions to inject life, fullness, and length into your sad looking locks? Be known that the health hazards of this beauty treatment outweigh its rewards.
“There are people who use hair extensions without complaint. But extensions add excess weight, pulling on the hair, which can lead to damage to the hair follicles,” Dr. Orly Avitzur Medical Advisor for Consumer Reports tells ABC News.

Hair Extensions

Hair extensions may cause patchy hair loss, blinding headaches and sometimes permanent damage. The procedure may cost anywhere between a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand.
Experts warn you to make sure whether the stylist attaches extensions using a method that is suitable for your hair type. You may develop problems if the hair extensions are connected too tightly or weigh too much.
The weight and the tension combine and place a strain on your hair follicles. This combined action causes your follicles to stretch out which results in hair loss.
The above process is known as Traction Alopecia, which causes permanent damage to hair follicles and prevents hair regrowth.

Hair extension cautions you to need to know about

  • Get professional help.
  • Make sure you have the right texture and color
  • Always use good quality hair extensions. You need to have the human hair extensions tailored for you. Check whether it looks natural, authentic and lived-in.
  • Using a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase at night will protect your hair from dryness and breakage.
  • Beware of weaving the extensions too tight. You can get long-term damage or hair loss.
  • Avoid putting chemicals on your hair; it will increase the hair fall.
  • Treat and nourish your hair with hot oil treatments. You can apply virgin coconut oil to keep your locks lustrous and healthy.
  • Get educated about using hair extensions and do it safely and smartly.

The Best Lip Moisturizer for Dry Chapped Lips

Best Lip Moisturizers for Dry Chapped Lips

Akar Skin – Ruby Tint Lip Butter
Henné Organics Luxury Lip Tint – All Natural Moisturizing Qtica Intense Lip Therapy Balm
Pur-lisse Pur-Lip Comfort Daily Lip Nourisher
REVLON Colorburst Lip Butter, Strawberry Shortcake

Your lips are a small and beautiful part of your body. They help you to eat, talk and communicate your feelings. Your lips are so tender, and they don’t have natural protection as your other parts of the body. It’s no wonder that you find so many products are targeted towards keeping your lips moisturized and protecting them from harsh conditions such as dry weather, cold winds and sun damage.

Moisturizing your lips is an essential part of taking care of your skin. When you smile, your lips must not crack or have a dull, dry appearance. Here’s where lip moisturizers come in. The best lip moisturizers add back the lost moisture to replace any natural oils that have been lost. They provide a protective layer to seal in the hydration and keeps your lips soft and supple.

Who needs lip moisturizer?

People who suffer from dry, chapped lips, dry skin, who live in cold climates, who get to exposed to suntan and wind, need lip moisturizer. If your lips are mildly chapped, it may be due to dry indoor heating.

Severely chapped lips may be the result of dehydration, malnourishment, or dermatitis a dry skin condition that gets exaggerated by irritation and use of specific products.

If you have chronic chapped lips, you might suffer a condition called cheilitis and the herpes virus. So it’s in your best interests to apply a lip moisturizer and visit your dermatologist.

What is lip moisturizer

Lip moisturizers are a great way to relieve and protect dry, cracked lips. The best moisturizer for lips may take the form of a lip butter or lip balm. Traditionally lip butter has a slightly more luxurious and creamier formula than lip balms. Lip butter immediately melt into your lips to condition and soften them.
Lip balms help to protect your lips from dryness. They contain a moisturizing ingredient such as shea butter, petroleum jelly or lanolin that prevent water loss.

Types of lip moisturizers: There are a variety of lip moisturizers such as moisturizing lipsticks, moisturizing glosses, natural and organic lip balms, medicated lip balms, lip butter, balms with fruity flavors and essential oils.
The first thing you have to decide is whether you want a lip moisturizer that also contains a little color. In that case, you have to look for lip glosses and lipsticks that have moisturizing agents such as glycerin. Stay away from matte or long-lasting lipsticks as they can be drying and make your lips look even worse.

Matte lipstick is formulated differently from its glossy cousin. Every lipstick has specific vital ingredients wax, oil, and pigment. The ratio of these ingredients indicates whether your lipstick will be matte or glossy.

A matte lipstick has more wax and pigment and less oil. So it gives you a creamy, opaque and long-lasting finish. However, the loss of added oils tends to make it drier and more likely to settle in the cracks and crevices of your lips.

Lip butter: They have a texture that is full of moisture because of the addition of natural and organic oils, like extra virgin olive, apricots, avocado, and Jacho herbs, etc. Lip butter may contain allantoin which helps to heal irritation, wounds, and sores. It also includes some unique organic oils too such as peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender.

Lip Balm: It is considered as a medicated ointment that can be used to resolve skin issues. There are many varieties of lip balms that are made up of organic ingredients to soothe your chapped lips or sunburnt lips. Some best moisturizing lip balms are made with infusions of natural herbs like mint, Calendula and also contain the antioxidant vitamin E. lip balms also come in a wide variety of flavored and nonflavored lip gels with varying amounts of vitamins.

Lip gloss: If you’re the one who wants a simple yet appealing look then you must try lip gloss. The essential ingredients in most lip gloss are aloe, glycerin and vitamin E. Some products may contain natural oils to give a shiny look to your lips. During winter, lip gloss can protect your lips from getting dry and chapped.

How to moisturize lips

If you’re prone to dry lips then moisturizing it may be a daily challenge. To keep your lips moist, apply a lip balm throughout the day. You can either use a moisturizing lip balm that is either petroleum based or the ones containing natural oils or beeswax. Try to avoid lip balms that contain fragrances, flavors or dyes because they might irritate your lips.

Gently apply the lip balm every time your lips feel dry. Avoid licking your lips because it can make it even drier. Select a lip balm with SPF since too much sun exposure can dry out your lips.

Go in for a lip balm that contains sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Choose moisturizing lipsticks and avoid the matte ones. In case your outfit demands a matte color, then apply a dense layer of lip balm before applying your lipstick.

If you prefer natural products, then you can use a natural oil or gel to moisturize your lips. Gently dab a few drops of oil or a pea-sized amount of gel on to your lips and distribute it evenly. Aloe vera gel, olive and coconut oil are some of the best natural lip moisturizers.

Exfoliating is a great way to to get rid f dry, flaky skin from your lips. This prepares a smooth base for your moisturizing balm. Gently run your toothbrush over your lips a few times after brushing your teeth. You can also apply a lip exfoliator to slough off dead skin from your lips.

Using a soft brush prevents the bristles from being too hard on your lips. Just move the brush around your lips, and avoid scrubbing it too hard. Rinse and pat dry your lips. Finally, apply some lip balm to moisturize them. Try using a lip scrub because it helps to slough off dead skin. Mix a teaspoon of brown sugar with a spoon of olive oil.
With the help of your fingertips or a soft bristle brush apply the lip scrub to your lips.

Slowly work the scrub around your sides. Rinse away the scrub; your lips will feel smooth and moisturized once you’re finished. A wet washcloth can also be used to exfoliate or wipe away the scrub. Rehydrate your lips with a favorite moisturizing lip balm or moisturizing lip butter.

If you exfoliate your lips too often, it will lead to dryness. Avoid exfoliating your lips more than twice per week. If you find that this practice doesn’t work, then peel once per week. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water to ensure that your lips be moist from the inside out. Drink about eight glasses of water, increase your water intake if the weather is too hot.

Facial Exercises – The Secret to a Youthful Face

Facial exercises are hailed as a non-invasive alternative to Botox and surgery. You can take years off your face by just doing some facial exercises. Yep and this fact has a strong scientific backing to it.

Facial Exercises

Facial exercises may improve facial appearance and reduce some visible signs of aging says a recently published research study.

“Assuming the findings are confirmed in a larger study, individuals now have a low-cost, non-toxic way for looking younger or to augment other cosmetic or anti-aging treatments they may be seeking,” says lead author Dr. Murad Alam, vice chair and professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine dermatologist.

When you perform facial exercises, they enlarge and strengthen your facial muscles making your face more toned and younger looking. ‘The exercises work the hypodermis or the lower layer of the skin, the dermis or the middle layer and the epidermis or the upper layer.

‘By working all these layers correctly, it will increase the blood circulation, allowing more oxygen and more nourishment to reach the cells of the skin. The result is a bright, healthy complexion with a beautiful glow which has fewer toxins and has a better ability to absorb moisture,” yoga expert Danielle Collins tells Marie-Claire.

Benefits

Your face gets its shape from the face pads which fit like a jigsaw puzzle. As your face ages, your skin loses its elasticity. And your face pads between the muscles and the skin become thinner. When your skin becomes saggy, the thinning face pads atrophy and slide causing your “face to fall” or age.

Facial exercises stimulate the collagen and elastin production in the middle layer of the skin giving a smoother, supple and tighter looking skin.

Experts say that facial exercises help your muscles underneath to become more prominent, so your skin gets more stuffing underneath it. The muscles become firmer and enhance the fullness of your face.

“Muscle growth is increasing the facial volume and counteracting the effects of age-related fat thinning and skin loosening,” says senior study author Emily Poon, an assistant research professor in dermatology at Feinberg.

How the exercises worked

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers
The study participants all middle-aged women between 40 to 65 years received training from a facial exercise instructor. They practiced them at home for a total of 20 weeks. The facial exercises were developed and provided by Gary Sikorski of Happy Face Yoga. Also the co-author of the study.

And guess what? The results were stunning. The participants found that upper and lower cheek fullness were significantly enhanced after following all these exercises. The results showed a three-year decrease in age appearance while performing these tasks over a 20 week period.
Experts recommend that you do the facial exercises for 20 minutes, six times a week. It may seem like a lot, but you’ll be amazed by the results.
